Hypnotherapy recording notes.

*        This 30 minute recording is a generic, adaptable hypnotic induction. It starts with an eye-fixation strategy that begins to narrow your mind’s spotlight of attention, along with brief instructions for relaxation to aid this. Some kind of attention focussing strategy is a crucial first step in hypnotherapy and should not be omitted or rushed.

*        There follows a somewhat lengthy deepening stage. If pain or arousal levels are unusually high this is often more helpful than briefer inductions. As well, first-timers may find it helpful to take their time. This improves the chances of a good induction into an altered state of consciousness. Capitalising on the principle of association you can develop shortcuts by repeating a trigger word, like “calm” or “tranquility”. Or use a phrase such as “dee..ee..ply re..laxxx..ed”, “calm body, calm mind” or “deep stillness within” during the longer inductions. Then, in later inductions, you will be able to bring back the earlier feelings more quickly using your word or phrase.

*        Alternatively, once you feel you are proficient at getting to depth fairly quickly and you don’t need the longer deepening instructions, fast forward a few minutes.

*        The recording then suggests a pleasant way of checking your attainment of an altered state of awareness, using suggestions of arm levitation. If you experience an involuntary floating of your arm, as though your arm had a mind of its own, this shows you are well primed to benefit from any helpful or pleasant suggestions that follow. Adopt a passive ‘whatever happens, happens’ attitude. If you do not experience confirmation of this change in your state of awareness by way of an arm lightness or a floating, wait a little while. Simply try again, sooner or later.

*        The suggestions to follow can be those on the recording or, better still, your own. Think of what deeply fascinates you, or absorbs your attention in your life. Use this to guide your own suggestions. This can be anything from seascapes to science fantasy; to the sights and sounds of nature or to music; or from fishing to flying to floating. Shifting your highly focussed attention to the related internal physical and mental experiences, and simply allowing, developing, and later reproducing, whatever pleasant or useful changes they bring, is at the heart of hypnotherapy.

*        Therapeutic suggestions towards the end of this recording are relatively brief and general. But they focus on helping to create states of mind central to common goals such as: pain reduction; helping sleep to occur naturally; and the development of deeper, more enduring calming responses to distress.

*        People who respond best to hypnotherapy tend to be inventive, creative thinkers. They are flexible and willing to experiment. Once they have the basic instructions and a few ideas to begin with they often develop their own self-suggestions. So feel free to add or subtract elements that help you apply your creative imagination in the service of your goals.

*        Practice once or twice daily until you can achieve the same effects without the recording.

Technical note: The mp3 recording can be converted to a format that can be played on a regular CD player using iTunes (for Mac’s or PC’s. Search Help ‘burn CD’) or Windows Media Player. Alternatively, Google ‘Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 free download’ and once installed use Burn or Rip Music >Create an Audio CD> Add (locate where you saved this recording to)> Finish> Burn. This is great software for burning that you can keep (or upgrade at a very low cost).
